Theology

This post is about the so called discipline of study called theology. I would like to begin by first defining the term using both the Catholic Encyclopedia and the Merriam Webster dictionary. Then we will examine both definitions in relation to religious beliefs and to each other.
That part of theology which treats of the theoretical truths of faith concerning God and His works (Catholic encyclopedia)
the study of religious faith, practice, and experience; especially : the study of God and of God's relation to the world (Merriam Webster)

Before I take these two definitions apart I would like to give my opinion regarding theology, I personally do not consider it a real academic discipline mainly because it is not based on any known facts. Instead the entire field of theology is based on religious mythology and speculation based on ancient texts and the nature of their preferred God. The problem with this lies in the fact that in order to speculate on the nature of God you must first prove that this being exists. The church has been completely unsuccessful at this and I don't think that they will ever succeed at achieving this impossible goal.

Now lets move on to the purpose of this post. I actually prefer the Catholic definition because contrary to their history of lies they for once tell the truth on this one. They refer to this discipline as a theory of the truths of faith concerning God. We all know that faith is nothing more than hope based on ones own subjective opinions or supposed experiences regarding the matter. Faith in and of itself requires no evidence whatsoever and just accepts religious beliefs as absolute.

It is my opinion that faith and truth are akin to an oxymoron, they are two contradictory terms that should not be used in conjunction with one another, nor even in the same sentence. The Webster definition is more simplistic and therefore easier to dismantle. Basically theology is the study of God, religious faith, practice, and experience. But the weakest link in this definition is God, there is no evidence outside of the bible or other religious text to his existence.

Studying something basing yourself on ancient texts and so called revelations is not studying at all. As I have stated many times, revelation is only a revelation to the one who claims to have had the experience. To the rest of us it is just hearsay. You are essentially not studying God but speculating things said about him based on hearsay. World mythology is rife with gods and goddesses and most of the worlds myths have taken their rightful place as such. I don't see why Christianities god should be the exception to the rule.

  1. Off topic, sorry,

I have to say it's right damned irritating to me that our fellow atheists friends do not leave comments regularly on our atheists blogs. I really think we need to support one another, even if someone thinks we're full of shit at least say something. I agree-disagree, something!

We should all speak our minds, the comments can always be deleted. I really do not understand this type of lazy?/scared?, mentality atheists have. What do ya think about that, Chat? Maybe I'm wrong?? I don't think so? But??? We're all fighting the same cause, evil dogma's and myths.

  2. I completely agree with you on that Steven, it's disheartening sometimes when no one even bothers to comment on posts you work so hard to provide.

  3. Yeah, and yours are so completely thought out, I know you've put a lot of time and effort in trying to portray your message, there should be hundreds of comments on each post, saying I agree or something. I just don't get it!

I've been doing this for around 4 years and I leave comments on other peoples blogs, yet they never leave a comment on my blog, except for those same two knuckleheads who think they're going to convert me, I've personally run them off a couple of times, and have called them every name in the friggin book. It seems like it's all in vain.

I know I'm aggressive in most of my posts, but I've tried to be kid-gloved, it still don't work. I like to read opinionated straight forward posts that is what I think distinguishes between a leader and a follower.

You sound like a leader to me and I respect that!

  4. I also don't get why this blog isn't getting more traffic and comments....?
People are lazy to a ridiculous degree.

It's doesn't matter if we are talking about church, politics or any other form of community activism, one thing is always seen: ONE percent of the people do 99 percent of the work.

I will also add: I LOVE this blog and I will really try to do a better job to personally support and participate.

  6. thats interesting. Do you consider Philosophy an academic activity too? Lots of philosophy is theological and based in reason. Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle must be stupid people by your own defintion
