Ten reasons why the Bible is not the word of God (updated)

1. The bible was written and created from the fertile imagination of man. Whether you choose to believe that it was “inspired” by God is a matter of faith entirely and not fact.

2. There are no firsthand accounts of the life of Jesus in the entire New Testament.

3. The earliest gospel (Mark) was not written till about 40 years after the alleged death of Jesus.

4. Many of the sayings of Jesus in Mark are supposedly copied from a hypothetical document called Q which has not been found. The existence of Q is nothing more than speculation.

5. The authors of the synoptic gospels: Matthew, Mark, and Luke and of the gospel of John were unknown and the names attached to these gospels did not appear till late in the second century. This was done in order to add authenticity to the work in keeping with the apostolic tradition which required that in order for a work to be considered inspired it had to have been written by an apostle or one of his followers.

6. Many of the so called historical accounts of events in the scriptures could not be corroborated with actual evidence outside of the scriptures themselves.

7. There are no extant (existing) copies of the original gospels, what we currently have are copies of copies that have been substantially edited by numerous scribes and the Church itself.

8. All the books of the bible were voted upon as inspired or uninspired by the clergy and bishops through several councils. Just another part of the editing process.

9. The bible was written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. This leaves plenty of room for human error in transcribing ancient languages to modern day speech. It is difficult even today to translate from one modern language into another accurately and still be able to maintain the authenticity of the message. Imagine what it’s like to do it with ancient languages that have changed or evolved over time.

10. The abundance of embellished stories that mix superstition with facts make it impossible to accept these stories as authentic or trustworthy.

  1. As a historian, I do take issue wiath this one: "There are no extant (existing) copies of the original gospels"

Even if they originated as written works (which I doubt), the lack of a first copy doesn't really mean much for something that old. First, things get lost, destroyed, hidden, etc. And second, even if the first copy were documented and preserved, it would still be no proof at all of the supernatural any more than the rough draft of Harry Potter proves that magic exists.

    Otherwise, good list. :-)

  2. I agree with you LadyAtheist, but the fact that what we have are copies of copies in my opinion takes away from the authenticity of the documents themselves. I personally don't think that these tales originated as written text but rather from ancient myths and oral traditions of the day.

I also agree that even if we did have original documents, that they would not suffice as evidence of the many miraculous claims of events made in those works. Thanks for your input.

  3. I'm almost certain the Big Jeez never actually existed. You could also include the Jesus story is told in nearly identical form in several earlier mythologie - such as Tammuz, Dionysus and Mithra. I recommend the 2005 documentary "The God Who Wasn't There."

  4. I've seen just about every documentary there is on the bible and the mythological Christ. I too do not believe that he ever existed. If you are interested in reading more about that I bookmarked a good long article on the matter, here is the link: rationalrevolution.net/articles/jesus_myth_history.htm

  8. just a thought,,,,if you do not believe God,, who would you say created us as human, with all our complexities,,since no body ever made one?

  9. To answer your question Anonymous, I don't think anyone or anything created us since I don't think we were created at all. In my mind it's not a who but more like a how question. How did life in general begin and subsequently evolved into the millions or maybe even billions of living species that exist today?

Our entire body consists of electrical impulses and chemical reactions. Why would it be so hard to believe that we came to be through the combination of chemical reactions and environmental conditions? I find the God created us idea bordering on the insane, since there is no basis for a belief in a god as a creator.

Let's not forget to metion that the god idea is a product of primitive thinking and a product of socieites whose knowledge of the world and science as we know it today were limited.

  10. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

  11. Hannah do you have any thoughts in your head or do you just quote the bible? Because merely quoting the bible is hardly going to convince atheists that you have any kind of a point to make. We can cut & paste from any number of mythological fairy tale god stories if you want to play that game.

  12. Exactly, we don't consider the Buybull to have any more validity than MAD magazine. The Buybull is complete and utter bullshit.

  13. @Hannah I noticed that all the quotes you used are critical of anyone who lives without a belief in your God. Also, that they state that we who are without God are of a debased mind (immoral). well two can play this game let's see what the bible has to say about you.

    1 'Do not judge, and you will not be judged;

2 because the judgements you give are the judgements you will get, and the standard you use will be the standard used for you.

3 Why do you observe the splinter in your brother's eye and never notice the great log in your own?

4 And how dare you say to your brother, "Let me take that splinter out of your eye," when, look, there is a great log in your own?

5 Hypocrite! Take the log out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to take the splinter out of your brother's eye.

  17. I have one thing to say to you all. God has given us the power to get what we believe. If you all are going to believe that Jesus never existed and if it happens in group consciousness then surely you're gonna change the meaning of it. God is very smart you know.
